According to a brief statement to local media, he stated that he would now address economic challenges within democracy, freedom, and with legitimate institutions chosen from the people.

According to Xinhua news agency, the local elections in Algeria started on Saturday.

Around 23 million Algerians will elect their representatives in 1,541 municipal assemblies and 58 prefect assemblies for a five year term.

The elections are the final step in the renewal of state institutions since Abdelmadjid Tebboune took power in late 2019, replacing late Abdelaziz Bouteflika.

He had been forced to resign following a popular movement calling to change.

The renewal process began with a referendum on a new constitution that was overwhelmingly supported in November 2020.

In June of this year, parliamentary elections were held.

According to the National Independent Authority for Elections (NIA), more than 15,000 candidates are running for election.
