Chennai, Nov 30, : The Tamil Nadu government must follow the Kerala counterpart in setting minimum support prices (MSP) to vegetables, source it from farmers and then retail it, S.Ramadoss, founder of PMK, said Tuesday. He cited the high price of tomatoes at the retail level and said that while it was sold at Rs 180 per kilogram, farmers received just Rs 35 per kilogram.
Ramadoss stated that tomatoes in Kerala were sold at Rs 56 per kilogram and that a large portion of the proceeds went to farmers.
He stated that the Kerala government had last year set the MSP for 16 fruits and vegetables.
The prices were minimal and the Kerala government would purchase the products from farmers if the MSP is lower than the market price.
Ramadoss stated that Covid-19 was at its peak when Tamil Nadu’s Horticultural department bought the vegetables and sold them to the people. It can also do it after fixing the MSP.
