Lebanese Prez accepts initial actions to facilitate Syrian refugees”repatriation

Beirut 9 August : Lebanese President Michel Aoun has reached an agreement on the first guidelines and steps to be taken to ensure the implementation of an action plan for the return of Syrian refugees.
“We have come to an agreement with the President Aoun on a number of points concerning the Syrian refugees return strategy, and have coordinated our positions, hoping to meet again next week to discuss the fundamental steps to take to begin with the process of returning,” said Minister of Social Affairs Hector Hajjar, following his meeting with the President and Foreign Affairs Minister Abdallah Bou Habib.

Hajjar confirmed that the coordination with Syria regarding the issue continues and has not stopped the process, according to Xinhua news agency.

The 4th of July on the Lebanon made public a plan to return 15,000 displaced Syrians each month, but has yet to get a written authorization from the UN Refugees Agency (UNHCR) who insisted that Syria is not safe for repatriation.

Lebanon has remained firm in following through with its plans regardless of the UN position since the country is suffering from an unprecedented financial crisis as well as the presence of many thousands of refugees that weigh heavily on infrastructure and the economy.

Lebanon remains the country that hosts the highest quantity of refugees per per capita in the world, with an estimated 1.5 million Syrians and around 13,715 of other nationalities.
