Broad, Anderson’s omission is due to a lack of cricket action leading up the Ashes: Atherton

Brisbane, Dec 8, 2008 : .Former England skipper Michael Atherton claims that the absence of pace bowling stalwarts James Anderson or Stuart Broad from the opening Test against Australia at The Gabba on Wednesday was due to a lack of cricketing activity.
Many were surprised by Joe Root’s decision to exclude Broad from the Playing XI, after including him in Tuesday’s 12-member squad. The Gabba pitch is known for favouring fast bowlers.

England chose to include Jack Leach, Ollie Robinson, Mark Wood and Chris Woakes as their pacers.

Anderson was not included in Tuesday’s 12-member squad as England team management felt that Anderson would have to do five Ashes Tests, which would have been too much for him.

Though there were rumors that Anderson had sustained an injury, an England spokesperson confirmed that this was not the case.Anderson was unable to manage his high-octane workload.

“Jimmy is healthy and ready to play.He is not suffering from an injury.” The spokesperson stated that he had five Tests in six week’s time, and was ready to play in the second Test in Adelaide.

Broad and Anderson have 1156 Test wickets each.

England’s last Test against Bangladesh was in 2016 with 632 wickets and Broad (524).

Atherton said Wednesday that they are just concerned about the fitness situation of Broad and Anderson.”I don’t believe those decisions are based on the quality or their bowling. If they had played cricket together, and had played in two or three warm up matches, one would have played, maybe both.

They are 39 and 35 years old.Broad tore his calf very badly last summer and he did it without any cricket.Atherton said that England was in a ridiculous situation last summer when The Hundred, The Blast and the new competition took over most of the middle of summer. It meant that there was very little cricket of any first-class quality.”

Atherton referred to the drawn first Test against New Zealand in June, when Broad injured his calf muscle, and missed the entire series against Virat Kohli’s India.

Broad played in the first Test match, and he did so after having gone five weeks without playing cricket.

The physios and medics told him that he hadn’t packed his bags and that he had pulled his calf just before the second Test match.

“I think they are very wary of Broad & Anderson coming into this match on the back of no Cricket – Broad hasn’t played since August, Anderson since September, they haven’t had any preparation matches, the rain has obliterated any practice they would’ve had so I think they were just being prudent. That was the reason.
