The Direct Benefit Transfer platform has seen Karnataka take on-board around 176 schemes from 35 departments.Other than the scholarship program, major schemes that have been added to the platform include minimum price support, PM-Kisan state plan, CM Relief Fund and housing schemes.

This instrument makes sure that each beneficiary receives the benefits according to the rules of the scheme. This initiative maps each transaction with the beneficiary and institution, ensuring that the college where the student enrolled can redeem the e-voucher.

The e-RUPI will be redeemed by the identified institutions scanning the SMS string or QR code displayed by students via an app or POS device.Students will no longer need to deliver a token in order to receive the scholarship.

SBI’s Managing Director for Retail and Digital Banking Challa Sreenivasulu Setty stated that the e-RUPI (UPI prepaid coupon) was officially launched by Prime Minister Modi on August 2, 2018.It is used to get Covid-19 vaccine.

The government plans to expand the use of eRuPI beyond the first-use case, which is DBT and scholarships. It also offers a cashless, secure, and hassle-free option.

SBI, one of the most prominent banks for e-RUPI implementation for other uses cases. It provides end-to-end solutions to Karnataka’s government to distribute scholarships for students to their education.

Kunal Kalawatia (Chairman of Products), NPCI stated, “We are thrilled to offer our eRUPI solution the Karnataka Government for empowering students with hassle free scholarships. We at NPCI are constantly working to harness India’s digital and technological prowess.

This includes continuously developing innovative digital products and services. We think e-RUPI will revolutionize the delivery process of all schemes. It is convenient, secure and reliable. Both students and colleges will benefit from this partnership.

Students receive the coupon, but they cannot redeem it for fees to universities or colleges.

After the success of the pilot project, the government is now looking at the possibility of using e-RUPI coupons in other schemes like seed distribution, fertiliser distribution and issuing laptops to students.
