Bengaluru, Dec 5, : The Karnataka Government has begun distributing eggs to schoolchildren in seven districts in the state where the malnourishment indicator for December 1 is alarming.Some in society are angry at the decision, arguing that eggs should not be distributed within schools because it encourages discrimination among school-going children.
Another section supports egg supplements for school children and claims that this project should continue as students are in dire need of protein supplement.They claim that children with better nutrition access have better educational outcomes.

In 2007, the BJP-JD (S), coalition government was led by H.D.Kumaraswamy had abandoned its plan to distribute eggs to schoolchildren, after being pressured by religious groups.It remains to be seen what the BJP government does to address the issue.

74% of Yadgir students are suffering from anemia and malnutrition.Kalaburagi (72.4 percent), Ballary (72.3 percent), Koppal (70.7per cent), Raichur (70.6per cent), Raichur (70.6per cent), Bidar (71.9 per cent), and 68% of Vijayapura students were found to be malnourished.

When Dr Ragapriya R, Yadgir District Commissioner, was asked about the importance of providing eggs to students in the area, Ragapriya R stated, “We have observed over the course of three-to four months of continuous surveillance, that the children receiving the nutritional supplement and eggs tends to improve their height and weight.All these parameters do improve.”

“I have not received any objections in my district (Yadgir), so far.” “No one has ever come to our office with such an objection.”

Students can benefit from eggs being provided.Indian children are the lowest in height in the world.

High malnourishment rates are one of the main reasons.Children will grow in height and weight if they are given protein.
