Kremlin denounces Zelensky’s demand for travel restrictions for Russians

Moscow 10 August : Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s request to impose a global travel ban for all Russians has drawn heavy condemnation in Moscow but also found acceptance in Baltic nations.
Zelensky’s appeal was viewed “extremely negativly”, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday, as reported by the Interfax agency.

“The absurdity of the mind is greater than any level,” he said.

The President said to the Washington Post in an interview published on Monday that “the most important sanctions are closing the borders since the Russians are removing the land of someone else” according to the DPA news agency.

In response to his suggestion of travel sanctions the the former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Tuesday called him “the most famous Ukrainian clown” on Twitter and even called him Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler.

Since the beginning of the Russian invasion Medvedev has repeatedly insulted Ukraine which he recently said might in the near future not “exist on the map of the world”.

Moscow often defends its war with the excuse that it is executing”de-Nazification” of Ukraine “de-Nazification” of Ukraine, an assertion that provokes anger because Zelensky is of Jewish descent.

EU countries that border Russia have been more vocal lately on the subject of travel visas for Russians.

The Finnish Foreign Ministry raised concerns regarding the possibility that Finland can be employed as a transit destination by a few Russian tourists to get into the EU prior to traveling towards their destination in the EU.

Tourist visas in countries that form part of the so-called Schengen area which consists of 22 EU countries, as in addition to Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Lichtenstein permit travelers to travel freely between the countries.

The Finnish Foreign Ministry is now contemplating whether to stop issuing new visas to citizens who previously used Finland as transit hubs in the past.

“It’s wrong that, at the same time that Russia is engaged in an aggressive and violent battle of violence in Europe, Russians can enjoy a normal lifestyle and travel in Europe and as tourists,” the Prime Minister Sanna Marin said on Finnish public radio station Yle.

“My personal view is that travel should be limited,” she added.

Finland’s request to ban tourist visas is supported by EU countries Estonia and Latvia which also share a border with Russia.

“Stop giving tourist visas to Russians,” Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas posted on Twitter on Tuesday, stating that traveling to Europe “is an option not a right of the human race”.

In the meantime, Latvia has already tightened visa requirements for visas.

While the European Commission proposes options to punish Russia however, a spokesperson was unable to discuss the demands to restrict visas for Russian travelers in the EU.
