Tensions have risen between Serbia and Kosovo, with ethnic Serbs in northern Kosovo blocking roads and erecting barricades July 31 to protest Kosovo’s decision require them to use the plates of a vehicle that are issued in Pristina.

The situation slowed down when Kosovo agreed to recognize Serbian-issued licence plates and other documents that are issued by Serbia to Kosovar residents for the next 30 consecutive days, through the end of August.

In the statement, Borrell said that there was still time for finding a lasting solution for the dispute , amid fears that if the issue is not resolved, it could result in violence.

He said that Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Kosovar Prime Minister Albin Kurti will resume talks “in the next few days”.

“I believe that President Vucic as well as Prime Minister Kurti recognized that there is no alternative to dialog in order to resolve this issue,” Borrell said.

The highest EU diplomat has called the recent violence as a “symptom” of the ongoing regional conflict that is not resolved.

Kosovo separated from Serbia in 1999 after a war.It declared its independence on its own in 2008.

The EU has been trying to broker between these two nations for many years.

The expectations were low prior to the talks.

Vucic tweeted prior to the meeting that he was “hopeful for some sort of solution” but remained skeptical.
