Farmers leaders maintained that the prime minister’s shock announcement was not surprising and they will continue to protest until these three controversial laws have been formally repealed by Parliament.

The Electricity Amendment Bill was also withdrawn.

They indicated that there will be continued interest in a minimum support price (MSP) statutory guarantee.

Rakesh Takait, spokesperson for Bhartiya Kisan Union said that the “farm reforms” being promoted by government officials are bogus and only cosmetic.

They will not alleviate the suffering of farmers. For farmers and agriculture, the most important reform will be to pass a law guaranteeing minimum price support.

Harnam Singh Verma, vice-president at the BKU’s Uttar Pradesh branch, stated that the Prime Minister had announced the removal of three farm laws. However, he didn’t specify when the MSP law would be passed.

The agitation for MSP and Union Minister Ajay Mishra Tani will not stop until a law guarantees that they are repealed.

Four farmers were apparently killed in violence at Lakhimpur Kheri on October 3.

Apart from the farmers, a journalist was also shot and killed along with two BJP workers.

So far, the investigation has led to the arrest of more than a dozen persons, including Ashish Mishra’s son.

The BJP promised that sugarcane farmers would be paid within fourteen days after it formed government during the last UP assembly election. It hasn’t happened.

Verma stated that sugarcane prices have increased only by Rs 25 in the past four-and-a half years.

Shekhar Dixit, president of Rashtriya Kisan Manch, stated that the agitation would continue until all demands from the farmers protestors are satisfied.

With an eye to the forthcoming assembly elections, the Prime Minister announced the news.

Sukhvinder Singh (the father of Gurvinder Singh), one of four farmers who were killed in Lakhimpur Kheri, stated that he would be attending the Mahapanchayat.

D.K., Lucknow Police Chief Thakur stated that the Kisan Mahapanchayat has been protected by elaborate security measures.
