New Delhi, December 27, 2018 : .Kerala emerged as the top performing state in terms of overall health in the fourth edition Niti Aayog’s State Health Index 2019-20.

The report stated that Kerala and Tamil Nadu were the highest-ranking states based on their composite index score for 2019-20.

Tripura and Mizoram are the smallest, while DHD and Chandigarh are the UTs.

“Healthy States and Progressive India” ranks the Union Territories and states based on year-on-year improvements in their health outcomes, as well as their overall state.This fourth edition of the report focuses primarily on measuring the performance of states and UTs and highlighting their incremental improvements over the 2018-19 to 2019-20 period.

Amitabh Kant (Niti Aayog CEO), Vice Chairman Dr Rajiv Kumar and Additional Secretary Dr Rakesh Tarwal released the report together with Sheena Chhabra, a World Bank Senior Health Specialist.

NitiAayog developed the report with technical support from the World Bank and close collaboration with the Union Health Ministry.

The report’s ranking has been divided into three categories to allow for comparison of similar entities.

The top three ranking states in the “Larger State” category are Uttar Pradesh, Assam, and Telangana.Mizoram, Meghalaya and Jammu and Kashmir recorded the highest annual incremental progress of all ‘Small States’.

The best increment performance was achieved by Jammu, Kashmir and Delhi among UTs.

“States now take into account indices like the State Health Index, and they use them to inform their resource allocation and policy making.” “This report shows both cooperative and competitive federalism,” Dr Rajiv Kumar said while releasing it.

Amitabh Kant stated, “Our objective with this index is not to just look at states’ historic performance but also their incremental performance.” He said that the index promotes healthy competition among states and UTs and encourages cross-learning.
