Khan’s decision of staying the process of selection to make the appointment of Associate Professor in the Department of Malayalam with immediate effect until further orders were issued late on Wednesday night.

The order is another jolt for the Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan as the associate professor who has been approved to be appointed is Priya Varghese, the wife of Vijayan’s personal secretary K.K.Raghesh, a former Rajya Sabha member.

Khan’s decision stated “The Hon’ble Chancellor has used the provisions of Section 7(3) of the Kannur University Act 1996 in this decision.Show the cause that notices are issued to all stakeholders separately, and the order has been communicated to the University.”

A few hours after Khan made this decision, Raveendran according to sources has decided to go to the Kerala High Court and it was made clear by CPI M state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan who stated in the party’s official journal called ‘Deshabhimani’ on the 14th of April the Governor has “become an instrument of the Modi government and the BJP and is using it to undermine the government of the state”.

In the meantime, the State Law Minister P.Rajeev declared that this was a matter between the Governor and the University , and the latter must decide what needs to be done, as the state government isn’t involved in this.

However, the Leader of Opposition V.D.Satheesan applauded Khan’s decision of keeping the appointment and urged him to ensure that a thorough investigation is conducted into similar appointments that were made by different institutions in the state over the past six years since the Vijayan government took office in the year 2016.

It was in June that Priya Varghese was approved for appointment as associate professor of Malayalam at Kannur University, after she was ranked first of the six candidates who appeared in the test.

An RTI report that was released this week, revealed that Priya Varghese scored the highest score (32 out of 50) in the personal interview and the second-ranked candidate scored just 30.

The RTI data showed that her score for research was just 156, while the second-ranked candidate scored 651.

Priya Varghese was the top choice on the basis of the personal interview and the appointment list.

Since the interview process started in November of 2021, it was stated that Varghese would be the candidate however the Youth Congress was up in over the fact that the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Raveendran was trying his best to obtain an extension of service which he received shortly after the interviews concluded.

The Save University Campaign Committee and other groups have been protesting since Varghese’s name was mentioned in the list of six candidates for an interview.

People who opposed her appointment pointed out that the requirements to be an associate professor required an Ph.D.degree and eight years of teaching experience which she did not possess.

They also claimed that the 3 years of absence she had taken to finish her Ph.D., cannot be considered as teaching experience.

In addition the experience of 2 years working as student director on deputation at Kannur University also cannot be considered teaching experience, as they claimed.

Yet, Varghese has always maintained her position in claiming she is a qualified candidate with all the qualifications for the post.

The controversy continues to make headlines, despite the fact that the University has cleared her appointment she did not sign up this week and the deputation was extended by one year at a state-run institution that deals with language in which she is currently working.

All eyes are now on the forthcoming 10-day session of the Kerala Assembly, as the opposition led by the Congress is prepared to make use of this opportunity to confront Vijayan.
