Jayalalithaa leads by over 60,000 votes

In a by-election tipped to bring her back to the Tamil Nadu assembly, Chief Minister J.Jayalalithaaa faced CPI candidate in the Radhakrishnan Nagar constituency on last saturday.Around 250,000 voters took part in the electoral battle whose two main candidates are the AIADMK general secretary and C.Mahendran of the Communist Party of India.

The counting of the ploos have begun today morning and Jaya racing towards huge victory and leads by leads by over 60,000 votes.After seventh round of counting, Jayalalithaa gets 67,899 votes and CPI’s Mahendran 4,876 votes.

Jayalalithaa had earlier represented her native Srirangam constituency prior to her conviction in the disproportionate assets case by a Bengaluru special court on 27 September last.As a result, she had to resign her assembly membership.

She was subsequently acquitted by the Karnataka High Court on 11 May, allowing her to return as Chief Minister of the state for the fifth time.In the present Assembly, AIADMK enjoys a strong majority of 150 members in the 234-member house.
