Japan celebrates 77 years since the anniversary of Hiroshima attack

Tokyo Tokyo, August 6 : Japan on Saturday celebrated the anniversary of the 77th anniversary of the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima that occurred in the last days of the Second World War.

In a memorial ceremony in the Peace Memorial Park, Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui warned in the Peace Declaration that dependence on nuclear deterrence is increasing in all over the world.

“We must immediately make any nuclear button meaningless” he said.

In addition, in presence at the ceremony was the Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, delegates from 99 countries as well as UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, the first chief of the world body to attend the ceremony in 12 years.

In his remarks, Guterres warned that a new arms race is taking place that is speeding up.

The Prime Minister stated “Japan is determined to pursue this objective in spite of global security tensions, while adhering to the three principles of not possessing, manufacturing or allowing the introduction of nuclear weapons within the nation”.

More than 3000 participants of the public also came out to watch the ceremony an increase of more than the attendance in 2021 and 2020, which were the first two years of the coronavirus pandemic NHK, the public broadcaster.NHK.

Officials have placed the list of people who died of the attack in the cenotaph after the inclusion of the names of 4,978 people who died or were confirmed dead in the last year.

The median age of survivors of the atomic bomb is now over 84.
