These astronauts will now be sent to our neighbour, Russia for astronaut training. The 4 individuals who are selected as astronauts are from the Indian Air Force.

Speaking at the occasion, Sivan has said that with a joint co-operation between Russia and India, this is possible. The 4 astronauts would begin their training from the third week for January.

The training would take in multiple phases, with the Gaganyaan mission planned for December 2020 and December 2021.

The December 2020 mission would be an un-crewed one, while the latter in December 2021 would carry the India astronauts aboard the GSLV-MKIII launch vehicle.

Out of the four astronauts, three of them will be chosen for the flight. As of now, ISRO has developed the CARE Module capsule, the spacecraft which will house the astronauts, and critical systems like safe crew ejection system, pad abort test, flight suit, and others.

If India can pull-off the Gaganyaan mission successfully, it would become the 4th country in the world after Russia, the USA, and China to achieve human spaceflight.
