Jerusalem, November 26, : Israel has banned travellers from seven African countries from entering Israel after a new Covid-19 type was discovered in South Africa. According to Xinhua news agency, Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennet and Health Minister Nitzan Horwitz, they decided on Thursday to list South Africa and Botswana as “red countries” amid reports of a highly mutated variant known simply as B.1.1529.
“Foreigners from these nations will not be allowed to enter Israel,” the Prime Minister’s Office stated in a statement.
Israeli citizens returning from trips to these countries must stay in a quarantine motel for seven nights, even if they have been fully vaccinated.
After two negative PCR tests, they will be released.According to the statement, travelers who refuse to be tested must remain in quarantine for 12 consecutive days.
South African scientists said they had detected the COVID-19 variant, and are still studying its implications.
