Jerusalem, December 8, 2008 : Israel announced the completion a high-tech underground wall surrounding Gaza Strip in an effort to prevent militants from entering the country. According to a statement by the Defense Ministry, the barrier was completed Tuesday and includes hundreds of cameras, radars, and other sensors, command centres, and control rooms.
It also contains a maritime barrier that can detect infiltrations at sea as well as a remote-controlled weapon system.It spans more than 65 km and contains more than 140,000 tonnes iron and steel.
According to Xinhua news agency, the construction took about three and a quarter years.
“The barrier, which was an innovative and technologically advanced plan, deprives Hamas from one of its capabilities it tried to develop,” Benny Gantz, Israeli Defense Minister, stated in the statement.
Gantz claims that the barrier will give Israeli citizens “a feeling of security.”
