New Delhi, November 22nd : .The organizers of an event in Lahore have condemned Nawaz Sharif’s speech.
Dawn News reported that internet services were suspended at the location shortly after the address was given. The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), supremo, began his speech by paying tribute the the late Asma Jahangir, a prominent lawyer and activist for human rights.
The live stream was cut short shortly thereafter.
Dawn News was informed by Munizae Jahangir (Asma’s daughter) that mobile internet and broadband internet were suspended shortly after Sharif started speaking.
The report stated that the organizers had regretted what they called “the state’s high-handedness” in blocking former prime minister’s speech.
The statement stated that the internet provider had been restricted from providing internet services to the conference organisers two hours prior to the closing.Sharif’s speech was scheduled for start.”
Dawn reported that the Dawn news reporter also stated that the cellular internet was cut two hours prior to the close session at the Avari Hotel Lahore.
Asma Jahangir Conference 2021 organizers, including the Supreme Court Bar Association and Pakistan Bar Council and the AGHS strongly condemned this act.They consider it an attack on freedom of expression.
According to the statement, after the cutoff of the video conference, Sharif was telephonically addressed by the organizers.
Munizae was quoted as having said: “We believe freedom of expression.That is why this platform non-partisan is open to all and we condemn muzzling the closing session, Sharif was to give an address.
Sharif demanded that Pakistan devise a plan to immediately pull it out of the current crisis and put it on the road to democracy in a wide-ranging speech.
He also reiterated the need for “putting our house in order”.
Former Prime Minister hit back at military establishment, criticizing interference in judicial or government affairs which he said had contributed to Pakistan’s “downfall”.
