Jaison Wilson New Delhi : , Nov 21, 2011 – Abhilash, a retired Indian naval commander, is unable to fulfill his dream of participating in the Golden Globe Race, the world’s only non-stop, round-the-world sailing competition without modern support equipment.

Abhilash Thomasy was the first Indian solo circumnavigator of the globe in 2013 and was invited to the GGR 2018.

He is also the only Asian participant in the GGR’s 2018 edition.

After a severe storm caused him to lose his boat, he sustained serious back injuries.

He was representing India at the 2018 race.Although he was in 3rd place at the time, he couldn’t finish the race and was later saved by a French boat.

The competition won’t allow GPS, satellite phone, weather routing or chart plotters.The competitors can only use this technology for an emergency.

This 42-year old sailor, who had taken a premature retirement in January from the Indian Naval Service, was planning to take part in the Golden Globe Race-2022.

Tomy, who spoke to IANS, said that the yacht was worth Rs 1.5 crore.He also revealed that expenses such as travel and food could cost him nearly Rs 4 Crore.

He stated that, apart from these, the expense was covered by his salary and incomes.

It was raised through an online crowdfunding platform and has been nearly Rs 45 lakh.

However, due to deductions like tax, it’s not possible to obtain the entire amount.

I approached numerous governmental and not-governmental organizations, including Kerala Chief Minister Office and Goa Tourism for financial support.”But, I have yet to receive a favorable reply,” said the ex-marine officer.

“As race day approaches in months, it is imperative that I get funds quickly.

Tomy warns that if I don’t get the funds, it may be too late and I might have to give up on this opportunity.

According to him, the GGR would start in France on September 20,22 and will end after 10 months’ travel over 30,000 miles across oceans before returning to its starting point.

Tomy left Mumbai in his navy sailingboat INSV Mhadei on November 1, 2012.He completed a journey of 23100 nautical miles and returned home to Mumbai on March 31, 2013.

He was the second Indian and 79th to achieve this feat.

On April 6, 2013, Pranab Mokherjee, the former President of India, hosted a ceremonial reception at Gateway of India.
