India will double the number of airports to more than 200, Minister

New Delhi, Nov 19, : , Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Ma Scindia said Friday that the Central government intends to increase the number of airports to over 200 in the country by 2023-24.
He addressed a gathering of ministers from civil aviation states and UTs and stated that the Centre will establish at least one heliport per district with the help of states and UTs.

The minister stated that states must provide support capital for the development of seaplanes.

He also appealed for UTs and states to lower VAT on aviation fuel, as this contributes significantly to the operating cost of flights.

India currently has the highest VAT rate for jet fuel.The overall cost of operating an airline is high because of this.

Industry estimates show that ATF prices account for more than 40% of the total operating costs of domestic carriers.This figure is 70% higher than the global average.

Scindia also stated that this sector offers a high cost-benefit ratio as well as huge potential for employment.

He stated that drones are being promoted and rules were in place.

The ‘Production Linked Initiative scheme’ will give a boost.

He also called on the states and the UTs for new airports, as well as swiftly handling land allotment problems.
