Harare 16 August : Senior opener Shikhar Dhawan is of the opinion that the series against Zimbabwe will keep KL Rahul in good shape in the lead-up to of the Asia Cup, while also applauding young players who are part of the group that is touring.
Dhawan was initially scheduled to lead the team in Zimbabwe prior to when Rahul was included in the team.

A fit Rahul is now in charge of the team, with the intention of getting the needed match training.

The 30-year-old is absent of action for some time with an injury to his back, with Covid-19 extending his absence.

After the end of IPL 2022, Rahul was scheduled to captain India in the T20Is at home against South Africa but missed out due to a groin injury.

The time off was prolonged after it was announced that he will require surgery.

The right-hander therefore missed the trip of England as well as Ireland.

The opener was set to play in the trip of West Indies and USA but after an encouraging Covid-19 score the BCCI medical team advised him to take a break.

In addition to Zimbabwe, Rahul has already been selected in India’s team for the Asia Cup at the end of this month.

“It’s extremely good news that KL is back in the squad and leading the team.

Dhawan, who is 36, acknowledged the hosts’ success, saying that a well-performing Zimbabwe team will present an excellent opponent for the India side.

“It’s an honor that they beat Bangladesh and I’m certain they’re playing well in cricket.This is the reason they won.It’s a great thing for us.It will keep us in the loop, and we should never take things for granted or take it lightly,” he added.

The left-handed batsman also played for the significance of the ODI format.

“It’s an elegant format.It’s a well-balanced format that lets you be aware of how to fight and defend.It’s not a rush format.We’ve been playing for a long time , and I love playing it,” Dhawan said.
