Kanpur, Nov 28, : , India batter ShreyasIyer stated that his mindset while he scored 65 against New Zealand in the second innings was to keep his eyes on the present and play as many balls possible. Iyer was the first Indian bat to score a century in the second innings (105).
He then followed it with a half-century in the second innings on Test debut.
“I had been in similar situations before, but not with the Indian team, but with my Ranji teammates.
Mindset was to have fun and play as many balls possible.I wasn’t looking too far ahead, I was just focused on the present,” Iyer said in a chat after Day 4’s play.
The 26-year old revealed that Rahul Dravid, his head coach, had instructed him to bat for longer periods in the second innings.”Rahul Sir had instructed me to bat as many balls possible, and I was determined.” We felt that 250, including the lead in the first innings, would have been a good score.So we’re very happy where we are.
Iyer expressed joy at reaching this landmark, but stressed that the main focus should still be on India winning the first test.India must pick nine wickets, with New Zealand still needing to score 280 runs on day 5.”I knew about it.One of my teammates informed me about it when I returned.Yes, there have been many others who have done it with other teams, but I was told that I was the first Indian to do it.It feels great, but winning the match is the most important thing.”
Iyer concluded by stating that the Indian team’s troika of spinners can lead them to victory on Monday.”Actually, there wasn’t much happening with the wicket today.The ball was keeping a little low.It was agreed that we would aim for a competitive total.I think it’s a great total.We have real spin power so hopefully we can get it done tomorrow.”
