Kanpur, Nov 29, : .Tom Latham & William Somerville fought back to keep India at bay on Monday’s fifth day of the ongoing first Test against India at Green Park Stadium. New Zealand is 79/1 at lunch and needs 205 runs to win with Latham (35) and Somerville (36) at the crease.
It was a solid start to the final day of the Test for the visitors, with a score of 4/1 overnight.
Latham and Somerville were great in scoring 75 runs in just 31 overs.The duo did a good job and didn’t take unnecessary risks.
They were strong in defense, but Ravichandran Ashwin often troubled them while trying to find boundaries against Umesh Yadav’s pace.
Latham was the first one to drive off Yadav’s boundary, while Somerville drove straight.
Somerville then made delightful back-foot drives on consecutive Yadav through-side deliveries and was fortunate to get a boundary from Ishant Sharma’s outer edge.
India seemed a little frustrated at not being able to get their first wicket of day.They were so desperate to get a wicket that they reviewed for a Latham lbw, despite the impact outside of the off-stump, and wasted a review.
The stand for the second wicket was at the half-century mark.
The duo then resorted to strike rotation to stop Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel’s left-arm spin.India will be hoping for a breakthrough in the second session, to push New Zealand backfoot in a tall chase.
Ashwin won the outer edge but got some run in the last few overs.
