Imran exhorts the international community to help Afghanistan

Islamabad : , November 23rd, 2009 – Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan asked the international community for its collective accountability to prevent a humanitarian crisis from occurring in Afghanistan.
Khan said Monday that the world owed it its support so they can (Afghan people) live peacefully and in stable environments after many years of conflict.

He was speaking at a meeting of Inter-Ministerial Coordination Cell of Apex Committee of Afghanistan in Islamabad.

Khan, who was present at the meeting, ordered Afghanistan to receive immediate humanitarian aid in the amount of 5 billion PKR (or $29.9 million).This will include food commodities such as wheat and emergency medical supplies.

To facilitate travelers from both countries, he directed the concerned authorities to restart bus services between Pakistan’s Peshawar city and Afghanistan’s Jalalabad.

Khan directed all Pakistani ministries and agencies to assist Afghans as much as possible.

In-principle tariff reduction and sales tax decrease on important Afghan exports to Pakistan were also approved by him.

The country, which has been supported by international aid for over 20 years is now cut off from all sources and facing the possibility of an economic crash and humanitarian crises.
