IMD forecasts heavy rain in Odisha, CM appeals to the people not to panic

Bhubaneswar 19 August : The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday warned that massive to extremely heavy rainfall could take place in Odisha as a result of the deep depression that formed by the Bay of Bengal.
According to the evening bulletin of IMD the deep depression is likely to traverse the West Bengal and Odisha coasts between Balasore and Sagar Islands on Friday.

After landfall, it will continue to move west-northwest across the north of Odisha, West Bengal and Jharkhand towards north Chhattisgarh and then weaken slowly.

With the forecast of the possibility of heavy to extremely heavy rain The Met department has issued a red-warning for Keonjhar, Bhadrak, Balasore and Mayurbhanj districts until 8.30 a.m.on 20 August.

In the same way, some areas in Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Angul, Deogarh, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Boudh, Balangir, and Jajpur districts could experience heavy rainfall during this time.

Alongside there are two or three places of Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nuapada, Ganjam, Nayagarh, Khordha, Rayagada, Gajapati, Nabarangpur, Koraput, Malkangiri and Puri districts are expected to see heavy rain until Saturday morning according to the IMD said.

Under the influence of the deep depression the squally surface wind of up to 55-65 km/h is expected in coastal areas, and 30-50 kmph in the interior districts of the state, the agency said.

As the sea is expected to be rough to extremely rough in the north Bay of Bengal and along and offshore of Odisha coasts, the local cautionary signal No.3 (LC-3) is displayed in every port of Odisha.

In the meantime the Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik in video messages appealed to the residents of Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore and Bhadrak districts not to be worried and follow the guidelines of the government.In a message that said every life is precious to the Odisha government, he said everybody should be safe and ensure the security of family members too.

Tourist destinations Tourist destinations Chandipur, Talasari, Kasafala, Dagara and Panchalingeswar in Balasore district have been shut for visitors on Friday and Saturday.

Balasore Collector Dattatreya Bhausaheb Shinde said senior officials have been stationed at various locations to monitor the situation through the night.

Additionally, NDRF and ODRAF teams have been deployed at strategic places, while the departments in charge have been requested to restore power and communication supply, in case of any disruption to the system, he added.
