ICEA is pleased with government steps to universal chargers that are used by most gadgets

New Delhi, Aug 18 : As the Department of Consumer Affairs met representatives from the industry to look at the possibilities of mandating an all-in-one charger for the majority of devices The India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) on Thursday praised the discussion that was healthy under the auspices of the Department.
In the discussion with Rohit Kumar Singh, Secretary of the Department of Consumer Affairs, the ICEA and other industry participants discussed the feasibility of the common charger port (USB-C) for electronic devices, such as mobile phones.

“The charging port industry has been largely organized, with the vast majority of feature phones (375 million) using micro-USBand the huge majority of smartphones (500 million) using USB-C.Low-power devices (such as wearables or hearables, Bluetooth speakers) are moving to USB-C as well for more expensive items,” said Pankaj Mohindroo Chairman of ICEA.

He stated that the ICEA stresses the importance of evaluating any policy in the context of environmental issues as well as the ongoing push for technological innovation, as well as India’s ambitions of being the top exporter and manufacturer of chargers in the world.

“More specifically, we agree with the Department’s idea of creating expert groups to study the issue in greater detail, in the Indian context,” said Mohindroo.

The government is considering the possibility of adopting an universal charger model for all electronic devices.It will establish an advisory panel to solicit opinions on the idea.

The Centre will establish three expert groups, which will present their findings after considering the opinions of all stakeholders on the proposal.
