Qualifiers for the ICC Women’s World Cup: Zimbabwe wins a thriller; Thailand and Ireland win

Harare, Nov 25, : .Zimbabwe’s last wicket pairing won the match against the USA.Ireland and Thailand took two points each at the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifiers in Harare on Thursday.
USA got off to a strong start in the Powerplay.

Gargi Bhogle (batting first) and Mahika Kandanala (batting second) put on 38 runs for the first wicket.They then left in quick succession.

They lost wickets frequently, including Lisa Ramjit and Shebani Bhhaskar in six overs.

The collapse of the batting unit was triggered by the wicket of skipper Sindhu Sriharsha at 22.Tara Norris provided some resistance with a 23 ball 18 that included three boundaries, but was not supported by the lower order.

USA, who at one time were 89/4, were skittled out by 131.Loreen Tshuma was the pick of the bowlers, with figures of 10-2-19-3.

Modester Mupachikwa, Sharne Mayers and Sharne Mayers got Zimbabwe off on a high note.

They put together 57 runs to reach the target in less than 10 overs.

Despite losing both openers shortly after, it seemed like the hosts were on their way to victory before they crashed in spectacular fashion.

Moksha Chaudhary was a wild ballplayer, taking four wickets in four overs.Zimbabwe was seven runs down at 87 after 73/2.

Every small partnership was worth gold at this stage.Loryn Phiri and Precious Marange added 10 runs to the eighth wicket, before Nomvelo Sibanda and Marange put on 18 runs to the ninth.

After Marange was out, it was down the No.Nomvelo Sibanda, Francisca Chipare and 10 batters Nomvelo Chipare were the 11th and 11th batters respectively to get Zimbabwe over the line.They still needed 17 runs at that point.Chipare was able to find the ropes twice in the second over to relieve the pressure and ended the game in style with a boundary, as Zimbabwe crossed the line by the smallest of margins.

In another match, Thailand decided to bowl first and they were able to dismiss Sharmin Akhter (captain) and Nigar Sultana (in the Powerplay).

At 14/2, Murshida Khatun and Fargana Hogue had a bit of trouble.They put together an 84-run stand.Both fell in a span of 3.1 runs, with Hoque reaching her fifty and Khatun falling four runs short.

Ritu Moni’s time at the crease was short lived.

After three wickets fell quickly, Rumana Ahmed (and Lata Mondal) steadied the ship with a partnership of 52 runs for the sixth wicket.Nattaya Borochatham took three wickets in the final over to complete her five-for.

Bangladesh ended the innings on 176/8

Sornarin Tippoch opened for Thailand, while Natthakan Chantham was their opener.They scored more than half of the runs with their first wicket stand.

Both batters were cautious in their approach and took 28 overs to score 97 runs.

After six overs, Bangladesh had dismissed both openers.

Captain Naruemol Chaiwai and Nannapat Koncharoenkai then took over the innings.

Rain playing spoilsport, players were forced to retreat to the dressing room.

The match was called off with Thailand winning using the DLS method.

Opening batsmen Leah Paul (Ireland) and Gaby Lewis (Netherlands) have made it a habit of providing great starts for Ireland in the match against Netherlands.

They didn’t disappoint when they were asked to bat first.

The duo put up a 61-run stand before Caroline de Lange stopped them scoring by taking both the openers.

Ireland lost wickets quickly and were at 85/5.Eva Lynch dismissed Shauna Kavanagh, and Orla Prendergast after consecutive deliveries.

Eimear Richardson and Laura Delany, the skipper, had to rescue Ireland and add 85 runs for the sixth wicket.Heather Siegers dominated the rest of the batting order, scoring four wickets including Richardson and Delany.

Ireland was then out of action for 199.

Prendergast made up the difference in the batting innings, dismissing Juliet Post for no runs in the third over.Sterre Kalis and Babette de Leede weathered the storm with a 59-run partnership.

Robine Rijke joined Kalis as a crease partner after de Leede was removed for 34.Their 73-run partnership brought the Netherlands close to victory, but Kalis was unable to score a well-deserved half century by three runs.

The Dutch were able to run-a-ball in the final 10 overs, with seven wickets remaining.It seemed like a straightforward chase.Two run-outs, including one by skipper Siegers changed the dynamics of the game before Prendergast was able to dismiss the well-set Rijke at 56.

The Netherlands lost by 29 runs after they needed 35 runs from their last four overs.The Dutch, who were at 158/3, were outscored for 170.
