Chennai 1st, September : “Savukku” Shankar is an extremely popular YouTuber from Tamil Nadu, on Thursday said to the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court that he stood by his statements about the judiciary’s higher levels that it is rife with corruption. He was reacting to a suo-moto contempt of court case based on his comments made on YouTube on the 22nd of July saying that the “entire higher judiciary was filled with corruption”.
He showed up in person and informed Justices G.R.Swaminathan and B.Pugalendhi of his position, but he later sought time to address the notice.
The court had earlier asked the blogger if he would need counsel which he replied that he would be arguing in his own.
“Which counsel will be speaking against the judge?” he had asked.
The YouTuber, however, settled with a senior lawyer N.R.Elango who is as well as an Rajya Sabha MP, later.
The court adjourned the matter until September 8 to allow for a second hearing.
The Madurai bench has issued a show case notice to Shankar on August 4, asking him to explain why contempt proceedings shouldn’t be initiated against him for his statements against the judiciary’s highest authority.
