Wearable tech: How it can help you improve your work performance

New York, November 21st : .Not only are you healthy but data from smart watches and fitness trackers can help predict job performance as employees travel from one place to another wearing these devices.
Research on commuters has shown that frustration, stress and anxiety can result in a lower-performing workforce, as well as a more counterproductive work behavior.

Dartmouth College, USA developed mobile sensing machine-learning (ML) models that accurately predicted job performance using data from wearable devices.

Subigya Nepal is a Dartmouth PhD student and the lead author.

The study involved participants using a Garmin VivoSmart 3 activity monitor and a smartphone-based sensor app to record physiological and behavioral patterns while commuting.

This included activity levels, phone usage and heart rate as well as stress.

External factors like weather and commute time, as well as commute variability, were also taken into account.

The data was compiled from over 275 people in the one year prior to the pandemic.

Nearly 95% of workers drove their vehicles and were closely monitored while they traveled.

The commuters were monitored for 30 minutes before and after the journey.

Pino Audia (co-author) said that high performers are more consistent than low performers in arriving and leaving work on time.

This dramatically decreases the impact of commute variability. It suggests that high performance could be achieved by sticking with better routines.

High performers showed physiological signs consistent with their physical fitness and resilience to stress, while low performers displayed higher levels of stress during commutes.

The commutes of low performers were also more stressful for them.

The research found overall that employees spend more time driving to and from work than traveling.

It was also shown that not all commutes are bad.

The research found that active commuters are more productive than those who walk a shorter distance or take fewer steps.

Your commute is a predictor of your day.Andrew Campbell, coauthor and lead researcher on the research said that this study shows mobile sensing can be used to predict how workers travel between the offices.

Researchers hope this technology can also detect commuter stress, and provide tailored intervention such as music or podcasts.
