Schools close in seven districts due to heavy rains that lash K’taka 2 days more

Bengaluru : , Nov 19, 2009 – Heavy rains in Karnataka are expected for the next 48 hours.The government announced holiday for seven districts including Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, and Bengaluru Rural.
Basavaraj Bommai, the Chief Minister of Karnataka, is presidering a meeting with the district administration on Friday to discuss the current situation and to take stock of the relief measures.

Bommai will attend the virtual meeting with all district commissioners and CEO Zilla Panchayats in order to obtain information about the damages caused by rains as well as the availability of emergency money.

R.Vishal (Commissioner of Department of Public Instruction) has authorized the District Commissioners to make a decision on declaring holidays for schools, after having assessed the rain situation in their districts.

To ensure student safety, the decision must be made at local level based on weather conditions.According to the circular, holidays must be paid back later.

District authorities in Chikkaballapur and Chikkaballapur have declared holidays for colleges and schools.Schools will be closed on Friday by the authorities of Bengaluru Urban as well Bengaluru Rural.

In Bengaluru, incessant rain has caused flooding and traffic jams.

For Friday, the India Meteorological Department issued a yellow alert for Bengaluru and its surrounding areas.

A depression is forming in the southwest Bay of Bengal.This means that more rain, thunderstorms and severe rains will be expected for Karnataka’s coastal and southern districts.
