Athens on the 9th of August : Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has denounced the surveillance of phones of the leader of the Opposition party conducted by the country’s national intelligence agency (EYP). In a message to the nation the Prime Minister of the country on Monday stated that the oversight of the PASOK-KINAL political party and the member of the European Parliament, Nikos Androulakis was not right.
Mitsotakis said that If he was aware of these crimes, he would not have allowed these activities, Xinhua news agency reported.
“Although everything was legally done however, the National Intelligence Service underestimated the political significance of the decision.
It was legally acceptable however, it was politically unacceptable.It shouldn’t have been happening,” he said in an address broadcast live by the public broadcaster ERT.
The scandal broke following Opposition leader Nikos Androulakis filed a complaint with the Greek Supreme Court 10 days ago for mobile tap attempts with spyware.He was informed by the European Parliament.
EYP head Panagiotis Kontoleon, and the Secretary General of the Prime Minister’s Office Grigoris Dimitriadis both resigned Friday.
The Greek Prime Minister has announced a revamp of EYP in the hope of improve its accountability and enhance the supervision of the Parliament through the Institutions and Transparency Committee.
