As we all know, this year has been hard on a lot of us including the film industry in every country, the Golden Globe Awards have extended their movie eligibility criteria to films that have been released between October 11th 2019 and February 28th 2021 and made their rules a bit flexible.
The 78th Golden Globe Awards, one of the most prestigious awards in the world has invited entries from filmmakers all over the world as part of its Foreign Film Project and unlike other academy awards, this award function which is hosted by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) allows more than one film entry from each country, hence considering 139 Foreign Language Films from 77 countries.
Marking this occasion as a proud moment from the filmmakers of India since 3 films were added to the list of films selected for the Golden Globe Award, namely: Dhanush’s ‘Asuran‘, Suriya’s ‘Soorarai Pottru‘ and Malayalam film ‘Jallikattu‘ under the Best International Feature category, this year.
‘SooraraiPottru’ / ‘Aakasam Nee Haddhu Raa’ directed by SudhaKongara, is based on the life of budget airlines Air Deccan Founder Captain Gopinath and how he fulfilled his dream of establishing a low-budget airlines company by crossing all the hurdles he often faces.It was also the first big South Indian Film that was released right before the Diwali season over an OTT platform after a prolonged period of waiting to have a theatrical release.
Next, ‘Asuran‘ that is directed by Vetrimaaran and produced by Kalaipuli S.Thanu.The film is based on Poomani’s novel Vekkai.
This film discussed caste inequalities in Tamil Nadu and a family’s fight against oppression.The makers celebrated as it was the biggest hit of the Tamil box office in the year 2019 (October release) that was starring Dhanush and Manju Warrier.
Thirdly, ‘Jallikattu‘ is the film that is going international this season and is a Malayalam Film which also released in October last year along with a nomination to the Oscars.The film is based on the short story by S Hareesh called, Maoist.
Directed by Lijo Jose Pellissery, the human-animal drama stars Antony Varghese, Chemban Vinod Jose, SabumonAbdusamad and Santhy Balachandran.Other Indian Films that were selected are listed:
