Goa BJP claims clean sweep in panchayat polls

Panaji 12 August : Goa BJP on Friday claimed that it had made the sweep in the panchayat elections that took place on Wednesday, winning over 150 of of the 186 panchayats.Meanwhile, the Congress claimed that it is waiting to hear from MLAs of the party and their workers.
The process of counting of votes for panchayat elections conducted through ballot papers was carried out on Friday.Although the elections were not run on party lines the candidates were supported by various political parties.The results are yet be officially announced.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has told journalists that BJP has won more than 150 panchayats, out of 186.”The elections are important for the democratic process.I hope the newly elected members will contribute to strengthening the rule of law,” he said.

State BJP President Sadanand Shet Tanavade said that in various locations, BJP supported candidates have won.”Around 800-900 of our panch members were chosen,” Tanavade said.

“While the election was not conducted in a party-based manner, people have backed candidates who were backed by the BJP,” he claimed.

Amit Patkar, President of Goa Pradesh Congress Committee, told IANS that he has yet to get the official details.”Right now, our MLAs are busy collecting the information,” Patkar said.

The panchayat elections of Wednesday witnessed the turnout of voters of 78.70 percent.

Five,038 candidates were in the fray in 1,464 wards.The Panchayats of Goa comprise an overall of 1,528 wards, 64 candidates been elected unopposed.
