Brussels 12 August : Brussels, Aug 12 : European Commission has criticized parts of an enormous legislative package on taxation and climate that was proposed by US President Joe Biden and making its way through Congress. If the law is passed, it will provide tax credits to buyers of electric vehicles if certain percentage of battery components were made in the US according to the news agency dpa reported.
“The European Union is deeply concerned about this potential trans-Atlantic trade barriers that the US is currently discussing,” Miriam Garcia Ferrer spokesperson for the European Commission, told reporters in Brussels on Thursday.
“We consider that (the bill) is discriminatory, and that it discriminates on behalf of foreign producers in comparison to US producers,” Garcia Ferrer said.
She added that , as per the commission the proposed law could violate the rules of trade of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
“We continue to call on the United States to remove these discriminatory elements from the bill and make sure that it is in conformity with the WTO,” Garcia Ferrer said.
US media reported that the tax benefits conditions have been added to the bill following the request of Democratic Senator Joe Manchin.
The Democrats required the support of Senators from West Virginia to have a majority in favor of the legislation.
In order to do this, they needed to compromise.
On Sunday on Sunday, the Senate approved the bill on Sunday.
The House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on Friday, and the likelihood of approval is high.
