London 10 August : A documentary about England All-rounder and Test captain Ben Stokes will be releasing globally in more than 250 countries and territories from the 26th of August on the streaming platform Prime Video. The title is “Ben Stokes: Phoenix from the Ashes” The documentary was made with Oscar Award-winning director Sam Mendes (best known for World War I film 1917) who is on-screen to talk about the lows and highs of the cricket legend’s record-breaking career through an array of interviews.
Produced by Whisper The documentary tells of Stokes journey, looking at the 2019 World Cup triumph and heroics at the Headingley crease against Australia in the Ashes and the lows that came at an enormous personal cost and forced him to have to take a break from the field and recover from a left hand injury in July of last year.
The documentary chronicles Stokes his most intimate and challenging moments, such as his final visit to visit his dying father and his battles with mental health.
Stokes explores this journey on screen with the cricket enthusiast Mendes who also serves as executive producer for the film.
It also includes intimate interviews with Stokes father, who passed away in the year 2000, Ged and his mother Deb and wife Clare and his two children Layton and Libby and Libby, along with family, friends former teammates and former opponents such as Joe Root, Jofra Archer, Neil Fairbrother and the late Shane Warne.The documentary is written by Chris Grubb and Luke Mellows and made by Sam Mendes, Mark Cole and Sunil Patel.
Cricket’s first ventures into the realm of documentaries about sport include The Test, based on the Australia men’s cricket team following the scandal of ball-tampering in 2018 in Cape Town, South Africa and is also accessible via Prime Video.
The series also contains Cricket Fever: Mumbai Indians which is based on the story of five-time IPL champions during the IPL 2018 season.It is available on Netflix.
