Children with dyslexia may have visual problems beyond what they read.

London, November 22nd : , Children suffering from dyslexia have a slower ability to interpret visual information. This is according to research.
According to the Mayo Clinic, dyslexia is a learning disorder that causes difficulty in reading. It involves difficulties recognizing speech sounds and understanding how these relate to words.

Published in JNeurosci, the study was the first to use new methods to analyze visual processing in dyslexia. It asked children aged 6-14 years old to determine the direction of motion for a mass moving dots.Brain activity was also measured.

The study found that dyslexic children took more time to find visual evidence and had less accuracy than other kids.Brain activity also showed differences.

Dyslexia is known to affect reading abilities, but researchers still don’t know how the brain functions are affected.

This could lead to better support for people affected.

These findings prove that dyslexia is not limited to writing and reading.

Children with dyslexia, when taken as a whole, also have differences in their ability to process visual information and make decision about it,” said Dr Cathy Manning of the Centre for Autism, University of Reading.

Manning said that future research is needed to determine if the differences in visual processing, decision-making and reading ability can be trained to help improve dyslexia in children with disabilities.

EEG brain activity monitoring in the study revealed that synchronised activity in the centralo-parietal areas of the brain responsible for decision-making increased steadily in all children until they reached a decision. This was more gradual in children with dyslexia.

Although the cause of dyslexia is not known, this study suggests that there may be a connection between motion processing.

Researchers said that dyslexic children often struggle to read and write, so it is important to understand how brain effects can be improved.
