New Delhi, Aug 7 : Senior scientist Nallathamby Kalaiselvi was named the first female Director General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) which is an association of 38 research institutes spread across the nation. She is well-known for her research on the issue of lithium-ion batteries and she is the current director of the Central Electrochemical Research Institute (CSIR) (CSIR-CECRI) located in Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu.
Her appointment lasts for a time of two years with the day starting from the date of taking over of charge or until the next order, whichever occurs earlier an order from the personnel ministry that was issued on a Saturday.
Kalaiselvi broke through the glass ceiling when she became a scientist who will lead the Central Electrochemical Research Institute (CSIR-CECRI) in February 2019.
She began her career as an entry-level scientist in the same institute.
Born in Ambasamudhram which is a tiny city in Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu, Kalaiselvi attended an Tamil medium school.
