Yonhap news agency reported that the case was made public after the couple called emergency help to say their child was not breathing.

The child was found dead by rescuers who arrived on the scene with many bruises. Her weight was only 13, almost 10 kg less than her peers.

Investigators discovered that the couple had subjected her to severe physical punishment 35 times since early 2018, for reasons such as lying or eating secretly.

Since August last year, the child was only given rice bowls with no side dishes or food.

Sometimes, they were even given nothing to eat or drink for the entire day.

The investigation revealed that the child had been left naked in a bathroom unheated for two hours after she had urinated, two days before her death. The stepfather witnessed the girl faint there and turned his blind eye.

The court stated that it was difficult to determine if there were legitimate educational purposes in their behavior or if the methods used were inappropriate. In the previous ruling, the couple claimed they didn’t “deliberately” kill their child.

The couple were married in 2017.

The mother had the girl and another son from her previous marriage.
