They claimed that it is a setback to democracy.
Yonhap News Agency reports that 1,001 activists from various civic organizations, such as the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, and People’s Solidarity for Participatory Democracy (KCTU), held a press conference at the Presidential Palace, Cheong Wa Dae, earlier in the day. They demanded the end of amnesty.

Yang Kyung-soo, chief of KCTU said that President Moon Jaein’s unilateral pardon to ex-President Park who was beaten through candlelit (rallies) constitutes a threat to South Korea’s democracy.

Moon will be remembered by history as the sinner who trampled on democracy and reversed the progress of history.

Protesters were also concerned that the pardon could lead to “seeds discord”, which in turn may cause “excessive socio dissipation.”

In celebration of the New Year, the government gave Park special pardons on December 24.

Moon granted a special amnesty in recognition of Park’s declining health.

Park is currently serving 22 years in prison after being removed from office and impeached for corruption and influence-peddling charges.
