The power rationing could affect factories that are part of several of the largest electronics companies, such as Apple supplier Foxconn and Intel, CNN reported.

The province also houses China’s lithium mining center an essential component of battery packs for electric cars and the shutdown could increase the price of the material’s raw materials, analysts say.

China is experiencing the most intense heat wave in more than a decade, with temperatures crossing 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) in dozens of cities. This extreme heat has led to an increase in the demand for air cooling in homes and offices which is which is putting stress on the grid.

This drought also drained the levels of river water, which has reduced the amount of power generated by hydropower plants.

Sichuan is one of China’s most populous provinces with an estimated 84 million inhabitants has ordered 19 out of 21 cities in the region to stop production in all factories starting on Monday through Saturday, as per an “urgent notice” issued on Sunday by the provincial government as well as the grid of the state, CNN reported.

The decision was taken to ensure that sufficient electricity is accessible for residential usage, the notice stated.

The southwestern region – that is also a key hydropower center in China is plagued by extreme drought and heat since July.

Since August 7 the heat wave in the province has accelerated to “the most extreme degree in more than a decade,” and the average rainfall has fallen by 51 percent from the similar times in previous years according to an article published on the official website of the government on Tuesday.CNN reported.
