Chandigarh : , Monday, December 27th : .The Aam Aadmi Party won the most seats at Chandigarh Municipal Corporation elections on Monday. Ravi Kant Sharma (the ruling BJP’s mayor) and Rajesh Kalai (two former Mayors), were humiliated.
AAP won 14 of the 35 total seats.
BJP (12), Congress (8), and Shiromani Akali Da (1) were next.
On December 24, 60 percent of voters participated in the polling.
Ex-Mayor Moudgil was awarded a ticket by former MP Satyapal Jain.However, he lost Ward 21 to Jasbir Singh Laddi, AAP, with 939 votes.
Moudgil faced anti-incumbency factors due to a lack of development work in his ward.Because of his subordination at the helm, he was also under attack by the party leadership.
By 828 votes, Sitting Mayor Sharma was defeated by Damanpreet Sing from Ward 17.
Gurpeet Singh, the Congress, was victorious by nine votes in Ward34, and Harpreet Kaur Babla (wife of Devinder Singh Babla), won Ward 10 by 3,103 votes, the largest margin of victory so far.
Sarbajit Kaur, a member of the BJP, won Ward 6 by 502 votes.SAD’s Hardeep Singh was victorious by 2,145 votes.Former Congress Mayor Kamlesh suffered defeat as well.
Subhash Chawla, Chandigarh Congress president, and Sumit Chawla, son of the party’s Vijay Rana also lost.
Arun Sood, President of BJP, also lost the seat from which Vijay Rana contested.
Chandermukhi Sharma, chairman of AAP’s electoral campaign committee, also lost his seat.
The AAP promised that they would provide 20,000 litres of water per household per month, free parking, door-to-door garbage collection, and free primary education.
Raghav Chadha, AAP leader, said that the result was a victory for Kejriwal’s governance model as many people had been yearning for change for years.
The BJP won 20 out of 26 wards in the previous civic body elections.Chandigarh held 26 seats at the last civic election.
