Kolkata 2 Sep : The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday detained Trinamool Congress leader and the chairman of Halisahar Municipality in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district, Raju Sahani, over his suspected involvement in an important fraud involving chit funds in the state.The CBI investigators have uncovered money worth 80 lakhs in his possession up to now.The count of the cash will be currently in process after which the exact amount of the recovery will be determined.
In the late afternoon of Friday on Friday afternoon, an CBI team suddenly carried out a raid and search operations in Sahani’s house in New Town here.
Sahani was present at the residence at the time.Another team also raided Sahani’s ancestral home in Halisahar.
The cash was found in the New Town residence.The CBI investigators also located the bank account of the man in Bangkok.
CBI sources have said that preliminary investigations have revealed that large sums were transferred to this account by an entity that was a chit fund, Sanmarg Cooperative.A gun that was not licensed was confiscated from the man’s possession.
Sources claimed sources said that Sahani did not provide satisfactory explanations about the vast amount of money he had retrieved from his possession.Then, he was arrested.
Sahani is the son of the former CPI-M leader as well as councillor Lakshman Sahani.Sahani, however, he rose to fame as a prominent community leader of Trinamool and in the time of time, was appointed the chairman of the Halisahar Municipality.
There has been no reaction from Trinamool Congress over this development at this point.
