Phnom Penh (12 Dec 2012) – Cambodia will be the incoming ASEAN chair for 2022.The country’s foreign minister Prak Sokhonn stated that the ASEAN spirit of a “united community” is important to ensure peace and stability in the region.
Sokhonn is also a Deputy Prime Minster.The remarks were made during a meeting with Derek Chollet (US Department of State Counsellor), Xinhua reported.
According to the statement, Cambodia’s top diplomat extolled Cambodia’s willingness to take over ASEAN chairmanship.He also highlighted the Kingdom’s priority across all three ASEAN community pillars.
He also stressed that ASEAN A.C.T.was the main theme.It stated that the ASEAN A.C.T.aims to foster ASEAN’s spirit of being a family, with high levels of “togetherness” in promoting peace and prosperity throughout the region.
Meanwhile, Chollet said that American President Joe Biden is looking forward to hosting the ASEAN-US Summit in Washington D.C.in the very near future during which both sides will discuss a wide range of issues and agenda, including bilateral relations, Covid-19 response and post-pandemic recovery.
ASEAN groups Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
