Phnom Penh : , Nov 30 : .To prevent the spread of a new strain in Covid-19, known as Omicron or B.1.1529 to Cambodians, Mam Bunheng, Cambodia’s Health Minister, said that Cambodia had placed restrictions on visitors from 10 African countries. He stated that the 10 countries include Botswana (Eswatini), Lesotho.Namibia, South Africa.Zimbabwe, Malawi.Angola.Zambia.
He stated that the move was made to stop the spread of Omicron variants to Cambodia.The ban will be in effect within 48 hours following the release of this statement.
According to Xinhua news agency, the Omicron variant, first reported by South Africa to the World Health Organisation (WHO), on November 24, was not yet detected in Cambodia.
Li Ailan, WHO representative to Cambodia, stated that Cambodia should be concerned about Omicron’s newly discovered variant despite its high vaccination coverage.
She stated that everyone should be prepared for a possible surge and that we should continue to learn how to adjust our response plans.
She said that Covid vaccination is vital for protecting high-risk and vulnerable populations like healthcare workers and the elderly.
On Monday, Cambodia reported 25 Covid cases, bringing the total national caseload to 120,112, according to the Ministry of Health.
Four more deaths were also confirmed, bringing the death count to 2,935.
