British workers will be hit by record-breaking pay cuts despite rising inflation

London 16 August : British workers saw their wages fall behind inflation by a record amount over the last quarter, as per official figures.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported that pay for regular employees not including bonuses, increased by 4.7 percent over the three months ending June, the news agency dpa said on Tuesday.

Some analysts predicted that wages would rise by 4.5 percent.

It follows CPI inflation surpassed a record all-time record of 9.4 percent in June, and is expected to reach about 11 per cent in the coming months.

The ONS claimed that this resulted in an increase of 3 percent reduction in regular wages for employees when inflation is taken into consideration this is the biggest drop since the records started in 2001.

Official figures also revealed that the amount of UK employees on payroll increased from 73,000 in June to July, to 29.7 million.

ONS Director of economic statistics Darren Morgan said: “The number of people in working increased in the second quarter of 2022, while the rate of unemployment as well as of those who were not working or seeking a job were not significantly different.

“Meanwhile the total number of hours of work per week seems to have stabilized just a bit below levels pre-pandemic.Redundancies remain at extremely low levels.

“However even though the number of open positions remains generally high, it dropped in the very first time since summer of 2020.”
