Kolkata 10 Aug : The Superintendent of Bolpur Sub-divisional Hospital Dr Buddhadeb Murmu, whose advice on bed-rest was helpful to Anubrata Mandal in the midst of evading Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) summons, has been placed under the microscope of the agency’s central headquarters.
The spotlight was turned on him following the allegations of Dr Chandranath Adhikari, the physician who issued the prescription for bed rest in plain writing, claimed that he was pressured by Murmu to give the advice.

In the early morning of Tuesday, after CBI officials arrived at Mandal’s residence in Bolpur in Birbhum district in order to deliver the summons for the CBI’s Kolkata office on Wednesday at 11 a.m A team of doctors from the Bolpur Sub-divisional Hospital was also able to get there. After a preliminary exam the medical team went out, after they had submitted a medical prescription of 14 days of rest for Mandal on a plain sheet.

When the news became viral and the officials of Bolpur Sub-divisional Hospital came under a lot of criticism, particularly in the context of the fact that the medical team of seven of the state-run SSKM Medical School and Hospital had, only the day before, denied admission to Mandal because his medical issues were not that serious and could be managed with medications.

From Tuesday night, the doctor Chandranath Adhikari, who issued the medical advice on a plain sheet of paper, began to speak to media representatives and claimed he was pressured to issue the medical opinion by the superintendent of Bolpur Sub-divisional Hospital Dr Buddhadeb Murmu.

“I had a day off on Tuesday.

However, Dr Murmu called me and requested that I go to Mandal’s home for a medical exam.I insist that Mandal should visit the hospital for the procedure however Dr Murmu said I was required to go.At his home, Mandal asked me to give a medical opinion to give him 14 days of rest in bed.I called Dr.Murmu to tell me that because I was not on leave, I wasn’t wearing the official letterhead. Then Dr Murmu insists that I write my medical instructions for the 14 days of resting on plain sheet of paper.

I thought it was prudent to follow his suggestion because I’ll be staying in Bolpur. But I am now suffering from a feeling of guilt because in the process, my image as a physician was stained,” Adhikari said.

Murmu on his part said that he was requested by the Birbhum district administration to send the medical team to Mandal’s home.”Even even though I’m taking a leave of absence, I was required to take the medical team according to the directions of District administration,” he said.

CBI officials have asked the way a doctor who holds the post of the hospital’s state-run supervisor, can direct junior doctors to give medical guidance on a simple piece of paper.CBI officials are looking into asking Murmu in the issue.
