New Delhi, November 19, : , The US President Joe Biden confirmed to CNN that he was considering a boycott of Beijing’s upcoming Winter Olympics. Biden said that it was something they were considering after a meeting with Justin Trudeau, the Canadian Prime Minister.
CNN was informed by a senior official of the administration that Biden will not be attending the Olympics in China in 2022.The report also stated that Biden’s administration is close to implementing a boycott of the Games.
According to a senior administration official, President Trump hasn’t yet signed off that no officials from the government should attend.However, discussions have leaned towards this direction in the past, the report stated.
Jen Psaki, White House Press Secretary, stated Thursday that the Olympic boycott decision “does not say anything about the Biden Xi meeting.”
Psaki said, “We’ve stated from the beginning of the administration that, in relation to China engagement, we view it through the prism competition, and not conflict.”
Psaki reiterated the government’s concern about China’s human right abuses and said that there were “certainly, a variety of factors” when we consider what our presence might be.
Psaki refused to provide any details about a possible diplomatic boycott and the implications for athletes.
Representatives of both the Republican Party and Democrats, along with Nancy Pelosi as House Speaker, called for a diplomatic boycott to protest China’s violations of human rights.
Some Republicans suggested that no American athletes should attend, however, the official stated that a complete boycott was unlikely at the moment.
