Bhanu Athaiya, India’s First Academy Award Winner, Passes Away At 91

Costume designer Bhanu Athaiya, 91, passed away at her home on Thursday after a prolonged illness.She breathed her last in Mumbai and was 91.The unfortunate news was shared by her daughter Radhika Gupta who stated that Bhanu was battling with a tumor for around eight years.The costume designer’s last rites took place at the Chandanwadi crematorium in South Mumbai.

Born in Kolhapur, Bhanu began her career as a costume designer with Guru Dutt’s 1956 film, ‘CID. In a career spanning 5 decades and over 100 films, Bhanu is also a recipient of two National Awards which she won for the 1990 film ‘Lekin’ and 2001 film ‘Lagaan’.

Bhanu Athaiya worked for several movies including Rishi Kapoor starrer ‘Karz’, ‘Agneepath’, ‘Teesri Manzil’, ‘Mera Saaya’ etc.She is the first Indian to win the Academy Award for Best Costume Design Oscar award for her work in the film Richard Attenborough’s ‘Gandhi’, which was released in 1982.

She worked with some of the leading filmmakers such as Guru Dutt, Yash Chopra, Raj Khosla, Raj Kapoor, BR Chopra, Ashutosh Gowariker, Vijay Anand and international directors such Conrad Rooks and Richard Attenborough.Paying heartful condolences to her family and dear ones.
