The elections to Howrah, Bally and Kolkata Municipal Corporation were originally planned for December 19, along with Kolkata Municipal Corporation.

This revelation is a huge embarrassment for both the state government and the Trinamool Congress.

Dhankhar took to Twitter and stated: “Reports that West Bengal Governor Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar had signed his approval for the Howrah Municipal Corporation Amendment Bill, 2021 (Amendment Bill) Bill are incorrect. As @MamataOfficial inputs are being received, it is currently under review under Article 200.

The Constitution’s Article 200 gives the Governor the power to give or withhold the assent of a bill, or to reserve it for consideration by the President.

Recently, the Howrah Municipal Corporation Amendment (Bill) Bill (2021), which proposed to remove 16 wards from Bally Municipality’s jurisdiction under the HMC was approved by the state assembly.Although the state government also wanted to hold the election of Kolkata Municipal Corporation, Howrah Municipal Corporation jointly, the bill was still pending with Governor so it had to be rescheduled.

On Friday, Saurav Das, West Bengal State Election Commission, called Dhankhar to discuss issues related to the pending elections to civic bodies within the state. This was amid claims of intimidation and rigging against the TMC ruling party by the opposition during the recently concluded Kolkata Municipal Corporation election.

The state is due to hold elections for 111 municipalities.
