Hasina: B’desh is capable of protecting its sovereignty & independence

By Sumi Khan Dhaka (12/12/2008) – The Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said Sunday that Bangladesh has all the capabilities necessary to defend its sovereignty and independence from any aggressors or enemies.

The Prime Minister spoke out while speaking vitually to the President of Parade 2021 at the 81st BMA Long Course, Bangladesh Military Academy at Bhatiari in Chittagong.

“But, if ever we are attacked by foreign foes, we have the ability to defend our independence.”

She said that the Armed Forces should share the sorrows and joys of the people of Bangladesh as if they were the children on Bangladeshi soil.

Their only goal as professionals should be to be vigilant and ready to fulfill their duties.If necessary, they must also be prepared to pay the ultimate price for their country.

Hasina said, “We believe that peace is possible, and the Father of Nation gave us the foreign strategy ‘Friendship for all, malice for none.’ But, if enemies attack our country from the outside, then we have the ability to defend our sovereignty and independence.”

She noted that the new cadets now have to take oaths and ensure the country’s independence.

The Prime Minister extended her warmest greetings and best wishes to the officers and said they had been entrusted with “the sacred duty of protecting the great independence, sovereignty and dignity of the motherland”.

You must fulfill all their needs and share in the happiness and sadness of others.

The Prime Minister asked them to uphold the spirit of the independence and put it above everything.

Mentioning that the ‘Bangabandhu Complex’ has been constructed at the BMA with all kinds of sophisticated facilities for internal training of cadets, she said: “I hope that this modern training system will play a pivotal role in building a trained and modern army.”

Hasina also noted that the BMA is a successful embodiment of the military academy that Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had dreamt of providing advanced training and developing capable leadership.

Describing various development programmes for Bangladesh Army, she said the government has established new infantry divisions, brigades, units and training institutes.

Hasina said the physical infrastructures required for the new weapons and equipment have been installed and built, while work is underway to incorporate and expand a variety of weapons and equipment.

At the function, Battalion Senior Under Officer of the 81st BMA Long Course Abdullah Al Islam received the “Sword of Honour” as the best all-around cadet and Company junior under officer Imrul Kayes got the “Army Chief Gold Medal” for his best performance in military subjects.

On behalf of the Prime Minister, Chief of Army Staff General SM Shafiuddin Ahmed handed over the two awards.
