Barkha Sengupta: ‘Historical shows are a great way to bring in lots of Indianness in the rest of us’

Mumbai 9 August : Actress Barkha Sengupta says that historical shows are not just informative but also entertaining and they remain popular with the public.
She spoke about this in a conversation about the historical show “Swaraj – Bharat Ke Swatantrata Sangram Ki Samagra Gatha’.

A 75-episode television series is about the story of India’s struggle for freedom and specific historical details that aren’t frequently discussed or mentioned in many places.

The actress will play the part of Abbakka Rani who was one of the first freedom fighters.

She was also the queen of Tulu Nadu which is which is a border region between the states of Karnataka and Kerala in southern India and the people living there speak the Tulu language.

She clarifies: “I think historical shows draw viewers because it is an era that majority of people don’t know about in a very clear way.I believe it will bring in lots of Indianness in the viewers as we watch what our country has gone through.”

“Kitni Masta Hai Zindagi” fame also explains why viewers would like to binge watch the show.She adds: “I think there are two motives – we want to feel patriotic , and yet we aren’t aware of many of incidents that occurred in the same time frame.Thus the historical shows are our way of connecting to that time period.”

The series, which is produced by Contiloe Pictures, will be documenting various historical events starting from 1498, when Vasco da Gama’s first visited India until 1947, when India gained its independence.The show will begin on August 14th from DD National.
